São Marçal is a town located two and a half kilometers from the center of São Tomé. It stretches in a straight line for approximately 400 meters, between the roads that connect the capital to the towns of Bombom and Pantufo. Here, water runs in the taps only once every two days, sometimes only every three.

With a population made up mostly of teenagers and young adults, São Marçal once had a significant population. Together with residents of surrounding towns, it had up to six thousand voters, enough to elect one member of the National Assembly (Parliament).
